Sightseeing
Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the 5th Century ‘Fortress in the Sky’,
which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island.
It is also known as The Lion Rock because of the huge lion
that used to stand at the entrance to the Palace
on the summit of the 600 feet high rock.
On its summit are the foundations of the Royal Palace, water tanks
to supply water and all other buildings and at the edges the guardhouses.
On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala
secular painting survived in the form of Frescoes of 21 life sized damsels
still shining in their original colors.
The Water Gardens, Fountain Garden, Summerhouses,
Boulder Gardens and the Caves within the enclosed area should not be missed.
Towns & Cities
The hill capital Kandy is another ‘World Heritage Site’.
It was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings during the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule and finally ceded to the British in 1815 after an agreement.
To the Buddhist of Sri Lanka and the World, Kandy is one of the most sacred sites as it is the home of the ‘Dalada Maligawa’ – Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.
Close by are the remains of the Royal Palace (Maha Wasala), Palle Wasala, where the Queens stayed, but now used for the National Museum.
Meda Wasala where other close relatives lived, Audience Hall, Natha Devala and Vishnu Devala are situated. The Bathing Pavilion (Ulpenge) is by the Lake and in the Center of the lake is the Island called “Kiri samudraya” (Milk white ocean) used by the kings as the summerhouse.
Sightseeing
Sri Lanka being famous for its ‘Ceylon Tea’ has added cheers to many the world for more than a century.
When visiting a tea factory, we will see how traditional Ceylon tea is being processed.
In the tea room we will be served a cup of tea, and it will be possible to purchase the various types of tea produced by the tea factory.
Entrance and guided tour in the tea factory is free of charge.
Wildlife & Nature
From the small town Mirissa on the South coast of Sri Lanka, we sail out in the early morning light to watch dolphins and whales in their natural environment.
Sri Lanka is home to the world’s largest population of blue whales, the largest ever living animal on our planet.
But also killer whales, humpback whales, minke whales, sperm whales and fin whales can be watched in the Indian ocean, near to the srilankan coast line.
Bottle-nose dolphins, spinner dolphins and sea turtles are also among the interesting animals we can watch on these Dolphin & Whale Watching trips.
About the Whale Watching company
The company we use has a high security among the passengers. Life jackets for every size and age are supplied.
Crew is well educated with life saving certification as well as knowledge of the marine wildlife.
The personal space of the whales is respected.
Breakfast and bottled water are included in the price. Comfortable seats and western toilet facilities.
Arrival at the harbour at 6:30 AM. Departure time 7:00 AM, daily from September to May.
The voyage duration is approximately 3-5 hours.
Sea sick pills are provided as the Indian ocean can be pretty rough.
